What Does Your Headshot Say About You?

Let's chat headshots! Anyone in business definitely needs a great headshot. Your headshot can be how people first "meet" you on your website before they decide to do business with you. So, it's very important to make a great first impression! Before you book a headshot session, here are a few things to think about:

1. How will this headshot represent my brand? For example a boxing fitness company should have a very different look than a lawyer. A boxing professional might work well to be photographed against an edgy textured concrete wall with dramatic lighting whereas a lawyer will probably request a plain corporate backdrop and soft lighting. It's great to have a vision of your brand and discuss this with your photographer beforehand. Simple descriptive words are very helpful like friendly, confident, approachable, professional, competent, edgy, dramatic, etc.

2. How does my facial expression affect potential customers? A child care worker should have a great friendly smile! I know that some people smile-on-demand much easier than others, but you should have enough photos taken with a comfortable photographer to get that great smile. Parents looking for a child care worker want to know they are hiring someone who is great with children. People like comedians, actors, magicians, etc. should show their personality through their facial expression. They should have multiple great photos that show their many dimensions. A tattoo artist could probably get away with a mysterious, stern expression appealing to their demographic.

3. What should I wear to my session? Clients ask me this all the time! If you've already determined your brand and how your facial expression will affect your brand, then you're well on your way to choosing attire for your headshot. If you wear a uniform for your job, that could be an option. If you sell fashion, you should wear clothing from your store and style it well! If you are a hair stylist, make sure your own hair is envy-worthy! Know what colours of clothing work well for your face and don't pick clothing that will be too similar to your background. For example white shirts on a white background aren't ideal. White clothing on me washes out my face whereas pink brings colour to my cheeks.
